Trinity Welcomes New Rector

Glad to be Here!

Ruth and I have been away from Ontario for fourteen years.  While living in Saskatchewan and BC, we would come home to Ontario once a year.  We are glad to be here, where family visits can be frequent!

Soon after our arrival here, Ruth’s mother, Viola Guy, and my mother, Hazel Sweet, (both in their eighties) came up from Toronto by train. They joined us for worship at Trinity Church on Sunday, June 15th.  They enjoyed meeting the people and taking in the beautiful scenery of Parry Sound.

Here is a brief sketch of my background and experience: I was born in Africa.  My parents were missionaries to the Ngambai people in the Republic of Chad.  I grew up in Toronto, and for twenty years served as a member of the Metropolitan Toronto Police Service. I worked in uniform patrol, the youth bureau, plainclothes, the detective office, community services, and crime prevention.

I enjoyed membership in the Canadian Fellowship of Christian Peace Officers.  In fact, it was through that fellowship that I was introduced to Ruth.  God answered my prayers for a wife who would serve the Lord with me.

I studied theology at Wycliffe College (University of Toronto). Among my classmates were Algoma priests David Hardie, and Richard and Linda White.

In 1994, I graduated from Wycliffe and was ordained.  Ruth and I, and our daughters (Sarah and Elizabeth) moved to the Diocese of Saskatchewan, where I served as a regional dean.

In January of 2004, I was appointed Dean of Caledonia and Rector of St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Prince Rupert, BC.

Ruth and I believe that there is no better adventure than the one to which God calls you. Now we have been called to Trinity Church, and we are delighted!

A special service, a Celebration of New Ministry, is scheduled for Wednesday, July 16th, at 7:00 p.m..  We look forward to your fellowship as together we serve the Lord Jesus Christ.

THE EPISCOPAL ELECTION PROCESS COMMITTEE
Information Bulletin #2

July 4, 2008

The E.E.P.C. has been meeting on a regular basis to prepare for the election of the 10th Bishop of Algoma which will take place this Fall.We are writing to keep you up to date on the election process and to ask for your continued prayers and support.

The E.E. P. C. is currently preparing an Episcopal Electoral Briefing Document which will contain the Diocesan Profile, a Vision for Algoma, Requirements for the nomination of candidates for Bishop and the Electoral process. This document will be in the hands of Synod delegates and Parishes in early August.

Nominations for the office of Bishop of Algoma will be accepted by the E.E.P.C.from August 15th until September 6th, 2008.Any delegate to the Electoral Synod may nominate a candidate who has agreed to stand.

While specific requirements for nomination as a candidate will be outlined in the Briefing Document, in general, they include the following:

A Nominee must be at least 30 years of age

A Nominee must be an ordained Priest within the Anglican Communion

A Nominee must have been an ordained Priest for at least 7 years.

A nominee must respond to the information requested by the E.E.P.C. as outlined in detail, in the Briefing Document.

The Nomination process is intended to be guided in its entirety, by the Holy Spirit. Nominees or potential nominees, their nominators and supporters are urged to conduct themselves in a prayerful and contemplative manner and to refrain from any activities that could be construed as campaigning.

As we ask the Holy Spirit for guidance in choosing our new Bishop, it might be helpful to consider the “Call” which will be part of the Briefing Document prepared by the E.E.P.C.

Our call is for a person of prayer, faith and discernment, who will accept the challenge of Algoma’s Vision. Our bishop must be a person who understands and is committed to Mutual Ministry; one who is a decisive leader of our Diocese, with an ability to delegate responsibility and to be our link to the national and international communities; one who is an active defender of the faith; one who is willing to explore and encourage creative shapes of ministry. Our Bishop must be prepared to travel extensively. We are calling this person to the very difficult task of being both an effective leader and compassionate pastor.

In our last Bulletin we invited individuals to suggest questions that might be asked of candidates for Bishop. We have received some of these. Others wishing to participate should have their questions to the Diocesan office no later than July 15th.

We ask for your continued prayers.

Trinity Renewal

A few years ago, on a motion from Trinity Vestry, a motion was presented to Muskoka Deanery requesting that a diocesan wide review be undertaken concerning the declining attendance in Anglican churches in Algoma Diocese and the resulting financial impact.

An amended motion was approved at Synod and a task force was established to examine the relevant issues.  The task force was made up of a lay representative from each deanery. Betty Whetham represented Muskoka Deanery.

Based on the recommendations of the task force, the Diocese is currently developing a strategic plan which Muskoka Deanery and Trinity will hear more about in the future.

Trinity Parish Council has established a Renewal Committee to begin the process of identifying and addressing issues relevant to our declining attendance.  The members of the committee are Colleen Watts, Betty Whetham, Douglas Allen, Chris Harwood, Cory Pepper and Ann Parrick.

Members of the committee recently attended a workshop, sponsored by Muskoka Deanery, on the subject of developing leadership in the parish.

The process of renewal will take time and commitment.  The Renewal Committee is fully committed and we are counting on the support of every member of the congregation. You will hear more from us as time goes on.

On September 28th, the Events Committee will be organizing a special Homecoming Sunday to include a choir reunion and the usual Trinity “food and fellowship” in the form of a BBQ will follow.

The Renewal Committee will keep you informed as plans develop. In the meantime, invite family or friends, who formerly attended, to come back to Trinity on September 28th to visit with old friends, sing some familiar hymns, take Communion with us and enjoy some of Trinity’s famous hospitality

Saving Jesus: Diving Into the Mystery With Questions and Discussion

When Jesus proclaims, “may your kingdom come, may your will be done on earth,” that is exactly the perfect translation. May God’s will be done on earth as it is in heaven. The model of heaven needs to come down to earth. What would an earth filled with justice – not force and violence- look like?

John

Dominic Crossan (excerpt from “Saving Jesus”)

How has your own understanding of who Jesus is/was changed over the years?

In what ways might have Jesus expressed his Jewishness on a day-to-day basis?

In what ways did the world Jesus was born into shape his life and message?

How is the story of the Good Samaritan an example of the kind of radical wisdom being taught by Jesus?

These are some of the many questions being discussed in the “Saving Jesus Sessions” that began earlier this year before church on Sundays and have continued on Monday evenings (6:30- 8:00).

During each session, the group watches a 25 minute DVD (Saving Jesus: An Exploration of Jesus Christ for the Third Millennium) that includes interviews with many speakers (e.g., John Dominic Crossan, Marcus Borg, Hans Kung, John Spong, Helen Prejean, Matthew Fox…). Between segments, the group breaks into smaller groups to discuss the topics covered. These topics range from “Who was Jesus?” to “Jesus’ Birth: Incarnation”, “Who Killed Jesus?”, “Teachings of Jesus: Wisdom Tradition”, and “The Atonement”. We conclude with a whole group discussion and, of course, prayer.

There has been a wide variety of local people attending the sessions who come with diverse experiences and opinions. The environment has always been open and respectful as we attempt to dive - through questions, discussions, and community - deeper into the Mystery that calls us all to listen.

THANK YOU...

....TO:

Those who come in during the week to plan, organize, encourage and supervise our children’s welfare

Those often unsung, humble daily workers who never refuse to help when requested, to help in the kitchen catering chores to facilitate fund-raising, social and bereavement functions

Those who take on extra office chores, in the evenings, over and above their daily employment, so that our weekly Services run smoothly

Our younger members who take on leadership for the congregation, over and above maintaining their young families

Our volunteer summer gardeners, keeping the grounds trim

Our seldom seen Sacristy members who quietly minister to the spiritual enhancement of the church

Our family of caretakers who can be seen in the early a.m. before work, taking out the garbage

Those who come in regularly to quietly clean up and organize the kitchen

Those who will drive to Toronto in their own time and expense to purchase quality supplies for the catering of fund-raising and Appreciation dinners

Those who regularly take the responsibility to meet in the evening hours for a leadership role in the congregation

Those organizing the new Directory and all who telephone to inform and keep the community together

Those who come in to clean and organize cupboards and files, and to keep the Library catalogued and current

Those who volunteer in the community beyond the church in the hospital, long term care facilities and schools

Those who make daily visits every five weeks to take in, organize and keep Mary St. Boutique running smoothly to the financial benefit of five churches and as a valuable service to the community

Those who spend time and money in distance traveling for church and ‘needs’ visiting

And last, but not least, to those who enjoy music and singing for enhancement of the Service and Community

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE.

How often do the rest of us really comprehend the time and scope given willingly in order that our church is maintained and vibrant, and useful to the community as well as ourselves.

Can you volunteer some time, some way? The Fall and ‘start-up’ season will soon be here.  Let’s add some new names to share and enjoy the benefits to the Glory of God in the Name of Jesus Christ

What Are They Up To This Summer?

The young people of Trinity are hard at work this summer.  You may see them at various establishments as you are out and about.

Cory Pepper is working at Shopper’s Drug Mart. His sister Meaghan is working as a counselor at Camp Tapawingo.

Savannah Magee is scooping ice cream at Georgian Bay Airways while her brother Grant is mowing lawns and swimming.

Angie Borneman is hard at work at Starbucks and is heading off to Laurentian University in the fall. Her brother Jordan is spending the summer in Brazil.

Jessica and Kim Shoebottom are working at rival donut shops while their sister Margarent Kamerman is keeping busy swimming.

The human contribution is the essential ingredient. It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live.
